The day has finally come! The long-awaited, much-hyped ESV Study Bible is finally here! Mine was pre-ordered awhile ago and I expect it to arrive tomorrow.
If you haven’t got one yet, they’re available in a variety of styles and colors (and incredible discounts!).
Get one and experience a renewed desire to know God through his word.
Tell me more. I haven’t found any commentary on the ESV from Tim Keller. John Piper, who I respect, says great things. I am a big fan of The Message, and I have used the NIV Study Bible for a long time now. Can you compare those?
Tim Keller and Ed Clowney both gave the ESV a glowing review during a Q&A session in their preaching class (available free through i-tunes).
As for comparing them, that’s a little harder. Let me ask, why do you like the Message? If you read it like a commentary, then okay. But the Message is not a translation, it’s a paraphrase. So, you are basically getting Peterson’s interpretation of the Bible (thus, read it like a commentary). The ESV is not going to be more literally, but still readable. I tell people it has the accuracy of a NASB but with the readability of the NIV.
THE ESVSB draws from the best pastors and scholars to provide world-class notes on the text (cultural, doctrinal, practical). As well as a whole host of other helps. I’ve been using mine for a few weeks now and I have not been disappointed!
